What does it take to be one of Dallas’ Top 100 Fastest Growing Companies?
By Sarah Wange, Market Leader at Core24
What does it take to be one of Dallas’ Top 100 Fastest Growing Companies? We asked President and Founder of Texadia Systems, Steve Burke, to share his experience and advice along the way.
What is the Dallas 100?
The Dallas 100 Awards is an annual event that identifies and honors the 100 fastest-growing privately held companies in the Dallas area by the Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship at the SMU Cox School of Business.
How did you get here so fast?
Texadia Systems has been fortunate to have substantial, sustained growth since our inception in 2013. How did we get here so fast? I sometimes ask myself the same question, but growing a business is a very difficult task that requires a true team effort. I have been fortunate to surround myself with great people who take pride in what they do. Our growth can be attributed to being good listeners of our clients’ needs, to providing solutions that help our clients utilize technology more effectively and being able to provide continuity of service to the systems we install.
What’s the single most valuable piece of advice you’d offer other entrepreneurs?
I read and share a lot of quotes as it relates to life and business and one that sticks with me is “never underestimate the value of persistence”. I think successful entrepreneurs must have persistence, passion and caring. Another key piece of advice I would share is to know your weaknesses and be able to hire people who can complement those weaknesses. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses and to be able to put the right people in the right place is critical to building a great culture and a successful organization where people can feel empowered to make an impact on the success of the company.
What have you learned?
What I have learned from being in this business for over 15 years is that there are a lot of things that can go wrong when installing electronic equipment and trying to get it to all work together seamlessly. There are so many variables that go into getting an effective AV system installed. A big reason for our success is that we can share our experiences in working with various technologies and that experience and expertise is what we provide to our clients.
What’s been your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge in our industry is properly managing the clients’ expectations in managing and implementing an AV project. What is the real impact of making a change in the middle of a project? For example, if one product change is made it can lead to multiple changes in the project. The result of a change can impact the cost, project drawings, programming and the project timeline. Working through this process requires effective communication.
Why are you successful?
In building our company we have worked hard to find, nurture and build a culture of people that care. Our people are our most valuable asset. Our employees not only care about our deliverable to our clients but they care about their workmanship, they care about our projects and they care about our company. Saying you do the right thing and actually doing the right thing are not the same. We strive to provide a great solution to our clients’ needs, excellent communication, and a high level of service. We work at it every day.
What’s behind the name?
I was born in Montreal, Canada and moved to Texas 40 years ago…One of my friends called me a “Texadian” and I thought that was clever. As I was starting the company I was struggling to find a name and it was preventing me from moving forward – so I wrote down Texadia which is a somewhat unusual name – I thought about it and went with it and it is here to stay!
What’s the coolest install you’ve ever done?
I’m not sure I care that much about the coolest installs – it more to me about how our customers use the rooms we create to improve their business. We have done several very high-profile customer conference rooms and auditoriums, but my favorite is Communities Foundation of Texas which utilizes LED technology and Advocare which uses front projection system and high-end audio. Both clients leverage these rooms as much as they can to promote and build their brands – and we got to help them achieve that. That is really cool to me!
What’s next for Texadia?
Texadia Systems will continue to be at the forefront providing our clients the latest technologies improve their communications and way of life. We will be a company that brings a great deal of expertise to our client base and help maximize their investment in technology. Our design build approach continues to gain market share as a better way to design/install/service an AV system. We will continue to make investments in our people and work hard to implement process to help manage our growth. We are very excited about being recognized by the Dallas 100 for our achievements but even more excited about our future!
